How we are supporting Teenage Cancer Trust

Teenage Cancer Trust and Daisychain Benevolent Fund Trust

There's never a good time to get cancer but for a teenager the timing seems particularly cruel. Without the work of Teenage Cancer Trust, it's likely they would be treated alongside young children and elderly patients at the end of their lives. Being away from normal life and friends at such a vulnerable time is the last thing they need. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. Teenage Cancer Trust develops specialist units within NHS hospitals that enable teenagers to be treated together, by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored for them.  The units aren't like ordinary cancer wards. They are designed to feel like places young people might naturally hang out. The walls are bright, the furniture is funky, there might be a pool table and a jukebox and there's always a place to watch films and surf the net.Daisychain Benevolent Fund Trust has partnered with Teenage Cancer Trust to provide funding for developing such environments. The shops are a major part of this partnership providing awareness of the work of the TCT and generating vitals funds. Not only do our shops fund the development of the specialist wards but we also help fund a growing specialist team of Youth Support Coordinators, who provide one-to-one and group support, keeping patients active, encouraging them to socialise and keep connected with other young people during long stays in hospital.

We also help fund specialist nurses who are experts in teenage and young adult cancer. They are responsible for developing and providing excellent clinical care for young people as well as emotional support for them and their families.

With WiFi, games areas, cooking facilities and individual lighting styling, the units provide both security and freedom to express their own personalities. Together we hope to help teenagers and their families feel less isolated and more engaged with the familiarity of normal life and their own social network.

Therefore please help us to raise vital funds by donating good clothing and bric a brac to our shops. We have the ability to convert this into money that the Teenage Cancer Trust can spend on services in your community.
